Ranking every big screen portrayal of Superman

Many actors have portrayed Superman over the years, but whose performance has stood out the most?

Written by Earvin Adjei

While Kirk Alyn and George Reeves helped establish Superman’s legacy on screen, this ranking focuses on modern portrayals of the Man of Steel. Given how vastly acting styles, filmmaking technology, and audience expectations have evolved since the mid-20th century, it would be unfair to compare those early performances with today’s.

4. Henry Cavill

When you think of Superman, traits like empathy, hope, and morality come to mind. Unfortunately, Henry Cavill’s version lacked much of the warmth that defines the character. This shortcoming wasn’t entirely his fault; the script leaned heavily into a darker, more grounded tone following the success of The Dark Knight. This brooding approach did not suit an alien savior in a cape. Cavill’s Superman came off as stoic and distant, which was a far cry from the beacon of hope seen in the comics and previous films. The disconnect reached its peak in Man of Steel’s final act, where Superman and Zod tear through Metropolis, leaving behind a trail of destruction. The city was leveled, and there were multiple civilian casualties. Then came the most controversial moment of all: Superman kills Zod. Though it was framed as a necessary decision to save a family, it felt wildly out of character and fundamentally misrepresented what Superman stands for. Cavill brought something new to the role, but the portrayal ultimately strayed too far from the hero’s moral compass, earning him the lowest spot on this list.

3. Brandon Routh

Warner Bros. Pictures / Album / Newscom

Brandon Routh took on the iconic Superman mantle in 2006’s Superman Returns, marking the character’s long-awaited return to the big screen after nearly two decades. Expectations were lofty, and what we got was a performance that was a mixed bag. Neither bad nor good, just fine. Routh did his best to channel the spirit of the classic films, with a striking physical resemblance to the comics and a genuine attempt at capturing Superman’s hopeful essence. His portrayal of Clark Kent was particularly strong, earnest, and kind, with a believable chemistry opposite Lois Lane. But as Superman, Routh came off a bit stiff. While he looked the part, he lacked the charisma and emotional depth that elevate the character from alien to human. His version of Superman often felt more like a statue than a symbol. Still, it was a solid showing overall: great Clark Kent, serviceable Superman. That balance lands him at number three on this list.

2. David Corenswet

Warner Bros.

Call it recency if you want, but David Corenswet’s Superman delivers in ways we haven’t seen in decades. From the moment he appears on screen, there’s a warmth and sincerity that radiates through every scene. He saves a squirrel mid-battle. He thanks his robots for nursing him after a fight. He even scolds Krypto for messing up the Fortress of Solitude. These small, human touches remind us that beneath the cape and powers lies a man shaped by kindness and humility. His Superman feels both fresh and timeless. As Clark Kent, Corenswet is just as convincing. His chemistry with Lois Lane shines, and for the first time in years, the film brings proper attention back to Clark’s roots as a journalist. His interactions with Jimmy Olsen and Perry White ground him further in the human world he strives to protect. What truly sets this version apart, though, is Superman’s unwavering sense of justice. He intervenes in a war, not out of obligation, but because he can’t stand to see innocent people suffer. That’s Superman. Corenswet’s performance inspires, uplifts, and reminds audiences why the Man of Steel still matters. If it weren’t for one legendary portrayal, he’d have claimed the top spot.

1. Christopher Reeve

Warner Bros.

Was there ever any doubt who would top this list? Christopher Reeve is the definitive Superman. He truly embodied everything the character stood for, and that was evident in his portrayal. Reeve went beyond just a role; he embodied the essence of Superman, capturing all the qualities that make the character so beloved. He is seen as the gold standard for any depiction of Superman on screen. He seamlessly blends kindness and strength, and above all, he portrays Superman with a profound sense of humanity, making viewers relate to the character on a personal level. This adaptation retains an extraordinary classic feel that can’t be topped. When Superman rescues a cat stuck in a tree, it epitomizes the charm and simplicity of the Man of Steel. Moments like these highlight the character’s commitment to helping others in even the most mundane situations. Reeve’s portrayal of Clark Kent is equally remarkable. He creates a distinct personality that contrasts with his Superman. Reeve’s Clark Kent is adorably awkward and endearingly dorky, which makes it all the more believable that no one, except for Lois Lane, could ever connect the dots between the mild-mannered reporter and the powerful hero. Overall, Christopher Reeve’s portrayal of Superman can’t be praised enough, and it’s no surprise that he secures an easy spot at number one on this list. His performances have left an indelible mark on the character and continue to influence portrayals of Superman to this day.

Superman is more than just a superhero, he’s a symbol of hope and strength. Each actor brought something unique to the table, but it’s the portrayals that honor his humanity that truly stand the test of time. Whether you favor the classics or are excited about the future, one thing’s clear: the legacy of the Man of Steel is in good hands.
